Another big week of college football is here! Being Week 6, teams will start to become bowl eligible, hitting that crucial 6 win mark. All four games I am covering this week have major implications, not just for bowl eligibility but also for a chance at the College Football Playoff. Marquee wins are the name of the game and this weekend has plenty, from the Red River Rivalry, turtle looking to take down a nut, a Wildcat looking to beat a mortal Bulldog, and a major Group of 5 showdown. Here are my Games to Watch: Week 6.
12 Oklahoma vs #3 Texas
12:00PM Kickoff on ABC (10/7)
Current Records:
Oklahoma: 5-0 (2-0 Big 12)
Texas: 5-0 (2-0 Big 12)
his matchup was an easy choice, and I would hope you would be watching it without it being on my list. The last time Texas started 5-0 was 2009, they would go on to go to the BCS National Championship Game, losing to Alabama (kickstarting the Dynasty), Oklahoma also starting 5-0 (first time since 2021), and with Red River you can throw the records right out the window. Texas dominated Kansas last week after an explosive 3rd and 4th Qtrs, Quinn Ewers continues to solidify himself as a Heisman frontrunner, while every side of the ball for the Longhorns looks much improved, especially the defense. The defense is allowing just 12.8 Pts per game, while the Sooners are averaging 47.4 Pts per game on offense, this matchup will show for real which is the real deal: Texas Defense or the Oklahoma Offense. I expect a back and forth early in the but the Longhorn offense will be just too much for Oklahoma’s (much improved defense from a year ago). Texas wins by at least two scores and pushes itself even further in to title contention.
Maryland at #4 Ohio State
12:00PM Kickoff on FOX (10/7)
Current Records:
Maryland: 5-0 (2-0 Big Ten)
Ohio State: 5-0 (2-0 Big Ten)
This a pick your poison noon slate of games and you can not go wrong with both. Probably the biggest Big 10 matchup over the weekend, two of the four undefeated Big 10 teams face off, Maryland looks to make a huge statement on the season while Ohio State hopes to build off of their big week 4 win over Notre Dame. Maryland is one of the few teams to beat every single one of their opponents by at least 21 Pts. a game, lead by one of the Big 10’s best QBs Taulia Tagovailoa who is having a great start to the season (1,464 Yds | 13 TDs) building upon his success last season. While OSU’s Kyle McCord looks to further cement himself as the programs future at the QB position, he played well against Notre Dame, taking the reigns to lead to a game winning drive with 1 second left. He has just 1 INT on the season (week 1 against Indiana). So a key thing about this game: 1) Ohio State is 8-0 against Maryland since the Terrapins joined the Big 10, 2) Maryland has not scored more than 20 Pts. at Ohio Stadium, 3) Maryland always brings it to Ohio State when the game is in College Park. So with all the being said, I am putting Ohio State on upset alert this weekend. I don’t see Maryland scoring less than 20 Pts at all this matchup. Maryland has the better and more experienced QB, while Ohio State also has an improved defense I’m not sold just yet (Notre Dame’s offensive struggle against Duke last weekend make me thing the Irish O isn’t as great as people think). I’m going in on the upset, Maryland shocks Ohio State and Lou Holtz gets the last laugh.
20 Kentucky at #1 Georgia
7:00PM Kickoff on ESPN (10/7)
Current Records:
Kentucky: 5-0 (2-0 SEC)
Georgia: 5-0 (2-0 SEC)
Last week I wrote about Florida and Kentucky needing to make statement and set the tone for their respective offenses, Kentucky did that and more throttling Florida on the ground. Kentucky RB Ray Davis single handedly broke Florida, rushing for 280 Yds and 3 TDs, helping the Wildcats found their offensive identity while also taking the next step in the SEC pecking order. Also for my Florida vs Kentucky write up last week I said both teams need to keep pace with a very mortal Georgia team, and man Georgia is looking very mortal this season. Last week they had a scare against an Auburn team in its first year under a new coach. They also played a close game against South Carolina in Week 3. Carson Beck is a very solid QB for the Bulldogs in his first year as a starter (1,497 Yds | 7 TD 1 INT) and of course TE Brock Bowers is back (413 Yds | 3 TDs) so Beck has a reliable target. Do I think this Georgia team is awful? No, this is still a very talented Bulldog team, they just lost a ton of starters from the past two National Championship teams. Like Ohio State I’m putting Georgia on upset alert this week, the Wildcat running backs are going to have a big game this week I feel. This game is going to be close, closer than Georgia vs Auburn last week (27-20), who ever wins gets it by a field goal. MY cut says Georgia but do not be shocked if they fall to the Kentucky Wildcats.
24 Fresno State at Wyoming
8:00PM Kickoff on FOX (10/7)
Current Records:
Fresno State: 5-0 (1-0 MW)
Wyoming: 4-1 (1-0 MW)
This is a very exciting Group of 5 matchup, with both teams looking to win the Mountain West and make a case for a New Year’s 6 Bowl Game. Fresno State is the only Group of 5 school ranked right now, 5-0 on the season with two Power 5 wins (Purdue, Arizona State). This is a Bulldog teams that has a real shot of going 12-0 or at the worst 10-2, their offense is explosive averaging 425 Yds a game. their offensive philosophy is throw the rock a lot, Mikey Keene is 11th in the nation for total passing yards (1,474 Yds | 14 TDs 1 INT), keep in mind he is Redshirt Sophomore too. Fresno State’s defense is also nothing to be scoffed at too allowing 188.8 posing Yds a game and 93.2 rushing Yds a game. the rushing yards being sub 100 a game is huge because Wyoming is a run heavy team. Wyoming is 4-1 on the season, but unlike Fresno State they are 1-1 against Power 5 teams, a huge upset in Week 1 over Texas Tech, and lost to Texas Week 3 (though they played them close for 3 Quarters. The Cowboys love to run the ball, 182.4 rushing Yds a game, led by Junior running back Harrison Waylee, who last week against New Mexico had 191 Yds on the ground, something else to keep in mind is Waylee has 457 Yds on the season and he has only played in 3 games. Something is going to give, either the Fresno State rushing defense breaks finally OR Wyoming’s one dimensional offense blows up in their face. I think Fresno State to continue their winning ways, passing all over the Cowboy defense.
