I Watched Host in 2026… and It Already Feels Like a Time Capsule

I have always been very hit-or-miss on found footage horror. I love The Blair Witch Project and the Paranormal Activity franchise. I even liked Unfriended, which was popular when I was in high school. But Host was a little different and felt like a breath of fresh air six years later.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a crazy time for everyone, and Zoom was a huge part of our lives. Still, I don’t think I would have the courage to conduct a séance over Zoom, which is what these characters did in the movie. I almost think doing a séance over Zoom would be creepier than doing it in person, since everyone is completely alone.

I didn’t go into the movie with high expectations, but overall I thought it was pretty good, with some solid jump scares in the last 10 to 15 minutes. I think the idea of the whole cast being responsible for their own lighting, sound, and stunts made the movie even more impressive, because all of these things were handled with strong attention to detail and felt believable.
