With the end of Spain vs Slovakia ends the group phase of this Women’s Euro Basket 2021. So before heading to the quarter finals on Tuesday, let’s have a look at what happened over the last 3 days during this group phase, group by group !
Group A : Belarus on top, Spain got trapped in 2nd place
Spain didn’t see it coming. 24 hours before the first game, Alba Torrens was ruled out of the game because of health protocol. A hard hit for the main Spanish player. Without their star player, Spain fell in the trap of a surprising Belarus team (with a 53-51 loss). However we know what Spain is capable of and the disapointment of game 1 was quickly erased with two solid wins against Slovakia and Sweden. But it wasn’t enough for Spain who emerges at the second place of Group A, leaving the second place to the surprising Belarus team. With this second place, Spain will have to go through the qualifying games, facing Montenegro. With a third place, Sweden will face Italy in the qualifying games.
Group B : 3 games 3 wins for Serbia, Italy and Montenegro heading to the qualifying games
Serbia destroyed everything on its way during the group phase. A win in overtime against Italy, a blowout against Greece and a solid win against Montenegro, Serbia confirms its title contender status and got its ticket for the quarter finals. Italy almost stole the game Serbia but the Italian effort wasn’t enough. Italy ends up second of Group B and will face Sweden in the qualifying games, in a game that should be an easy win for Italy. Montenegro will have to go through a complex game against Spain in order to access quarter finals.
Group C : Belgium on top, heroic Bosnia !
Belgium went through a hard group phase. A 15 points loss against an unexpected team of Bosnia, a blowout win against Slovenia and a 2 points win against Turkey, Emma Meesseman’s teammates had to fight hard in order to access the quarter finals ! On the other side nobody expected Bosnia ! 22 years after their last game in a Euro Basket tournament, Bosnia was back and what a surprise ! A win against the highly favourite Belgian team, a win against Turkey, Bosnia ends up 2-1 with the second place and will have to face Croatia in the qualifying games. With a similar group phase (also 2 wins) Slovenia ends up third and will have to face a solid Russian team in the qualifying games, which is not an ideal scenario for Slovenia.
Group D : a dominating French team crushes group D
The French girls have no fear admitting it : they are looking for a gold medal in this tournament ! A huge 42 points win against Croatia, a solid win against Czech Republic and another blowout today against Russia, France is heading to the quarter finals, ready to face anyone coming against them. With a solid group phase Russia ends up second and will face a disapointing Slovenian team. Regarding what happened during the group phase, Russia should win and access quarter finals. Croatia ends up third and will have to face the surprising Bosnian team in what will be a very open game !
